It is not often that we talk about global news on this blog, in fact, the only other time may be when we compare national health insurance rates but this is beneficial to all. All across the world, we start a new global holiday, Global Hand washing Day.
The main point of the day is that washing your hands with water is not enough, soap is a must! Washing with soap is the most effective and inexpensive way to prevent diarrhea diseases and pneumonia. There is never any emphasis put on this kind of sickness but the United Nations released statistics that showed that together they are responsible for the deaths of more than 3.5 million children under five every year.
The most shocking and exciting news I saw was that “hand washing with soap can make a significant contribution towards achieving the Millennium Development Goal of reducing under-five child deaths by two-thirds by 2015.”
This new day of dedication will focus on schools and the children, hopefully promoting change in behavior to fight preventable diseases. Although the day is focused on children, adults can still do their part and contribute to the cause.
